Tim's Two Cents-December 27

Note: Tim's Sports World will be on a light schedule this coming week because I'll be up north in Santa Rosa for a few days.

2009-2010 Los Angeles Kings Headed to the Playoffs?

Here's something I saw the other day that surprised me.  If the NHL Playoffs were to start today, the Los Angeles Kings would be one of the eight teams from the Western Conference that would be going to the postseason.  You read that right, the Los Angeles Kings!

As of today, the Kings occupy the fifth spot in the Western Conference.  They are turning the hockey world upside down with their 47 points and 22 wins heading into yesterday's matchup with the Phoenix Coyotes.  They ended up losing 4 to 2.  In addition, they're only four points off the pace of the San Jose Sharks for the top spot in the Western Conference.  It remains to be seen if they have what it takes to make a serious run, but former coach and current ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose is probably proud of what this year's team has accomplished so far. If they can pull it off, they'll be my underdog team to root for when the playoffs start.
