Local College Sports News

Me next to University of La Verne sign with tennis courts in background.

In this entry, I will focus on local college sports news, including the University of La Verne where I recently graduated from.  First, let me give you a little background information on La Verne and their athletic programs.  The University of La Verne was founded in 1891 by the Church of the Brethren.  They are a Division III school and are part of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).  Their mascot is the Leopards, or Leos for short and their are 18 athletic programs on La Verne campus.     The SCIAC includes Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, California Lutheran University, Whittier College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), Occidental College, Caltech, and the University of Redlands.

The winter sports are currently in full action at La Verne with men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming.

In men's basketball recently, the Leos fell in defeat to non conference opponent, the Panthers of Chapman University yesterday in a close one 64-63.  Sophomore forward/center Austin Napolitano led the men in scoring and was one of three Leos in double figures with 16 points in the loss.  The team now has a 1 and 6 record overall and will get geared up for a home contest against Albion next Saturday.  Other men's scores from Saturday include CMS over Hope International 75-63, Azusa Pacific trouncing Redlands 93-75, Biola victorious over Pomona-Pitzer 53-38, the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran ruling La Sierra 89-65, and the Titans of Cal State Fullertan blowing out Occidental 97-59.

On the women's side Saturday, Pomona-Pitzer was victorious over Southwestern of Arizona 95-48, Redlands cruised to a win against Chapman 78-59, and Whittier notched a win against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz 71-62.
