According to reports from hooprumors.com and Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Jason Collins has signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets.  Collins made his debut Sunday night in a 108-102 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.  With that debut, Collins the first publicly gay athlete in any major professional North American sport.

While there have been past athletes who have come out, none did so until after their playing career was over.  That was until Michael Sam came out 15 days ago.  The difference being Sam is currently participating the NFL Scouting Combine leading up to the draft after playing college football for the Tigers at the University of Missouri.

This could be the tipping point that would encourage other athletes across all sports to not be afraid of being ostracized because of what their sexual orientation.  The bottom line is that no matter who you are, the most important thing is to just be yourself and be comfortable with who are and the rest will take care of itself.
